NFL Exec Breaks Down in Tears During Senate Hearing on Domestic Violence

On Tuesday, the Senate held a hearing to examine domestic violence in professional sports and what the major leagues are doing to combat the prevalent actions of players. During his remarks to the body, the NFL’s executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent broke down in tears as he spoke about the victims and survivors of abuse.

Vincent revealed his own history of dealing with this issue as a child, watching as his mother was repeatedly beaten in his home growing up. “I relate to the 20 million victims, survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse in every community across our great nation,” he said, fighting back tears. But as a former NFL player, Vincent said he also relates to the majority current players who are “terrific fathers, husbands and men.”

The executive then laid out a number of steps the NFL is taking to prevent incidents like the one involving Ray Rice from happening in the future. Those include a review of the league’s Personal Conduct Policy, a mandatory education program on the subject for all NFL employees and a continued PSA campaign to raise awareness about the issue.
