Speaker John Boehner announced details today of his planned lawsuit against President Obama, and revealed that the focus of the suit will be the unilateral action the president has taken with regards to the employer mandate provision of the Affordable Care Act.
Boehner claims that Obama has been “effectively creating his own law by literally waiving the employer mandate and the penalties for failing to comply with it.” He insists the purpose of the lawsuit is about reining in a president who’s gone beyond the bounds of his office, and this is not simply a partisan exercise.
Boehner expresses worry that Obama thinking “he has the power to make his own laws” could have on the future of the government’s power balance. Obama, of course, has repeatedly dismissed the whole thing as a joke.
The White House released a statement today saying, in part, “It is disappointing that Speaker Boehner and Congressional Republicans have decided to waste time and taxpayer dollars on a political stunt.”
