In a joint People Magazine interview with her husband, First Lady Michelle Obama spoke out in her first post-election interview about what she did on election night and her reaction to Donald Trump‘s victory.
As the results came in on November 8th, Obama said, “I went to bed… I don’t watch debates, I don’t like to watch the political discourse. I never have. I barely did with him.”
The first lady, of course, was very critical of Trump in the few campaign appearances she made. She delivered one of the biggest speeches of the campaign in response to his comments on that Access Hollywood tape, and on the night before the election she implored people not to “play around with a protest vote.”
And after all that, this is what Obama had to say about Trump’s victory:
“Once you do what you can do, then the rest is easy. It was in the hands of the American people. Anything that I felt about the election I said and I stand by. This is our democracy, and this is how it works. We are ready to work with the next administration and make sure they are as successful as they can be. Because that’s what’s best for this country.”
