More Texas Republicans hold a favorable opinion of Donald Trump than Ted Cruz, according to a new University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll.
The poll found that 63% of Lone Star GOPers have a favorable opinion of Cruz, fewer than the real estate mogul, who enjoys 65% favorability.
However, Trump also has higher unfavorables among Texas Republicans: 28% to Cruz’s 25%.
In the bitterly fought GOP primary Cruz beat Trump in his home state of Texas, snagging 44% of the Republican vote over Trump’s 27%.
Cruz caused a stir when he pointedly refused to endorse Trump during his RNC speech. After backlash from top GOP donors, he eventually came around. During the primary, Trump alleged that Cruz’s father was involved in JFK’s assassination and tweeted an unflattering photograph of his wife.
Among likely Texas voters, Cruz has favorability ratings from 32% and unfavorable ratings from 49%. He plans to seek reelection for his senate seat in 2018.
