Reporters Grill State Dept. Spox About ‘Mishandled’ Hillary Emails
State Department spokesman Mark Toner got an earful from reporters at today’s briefing over the after-the-fact classifying of Hillary Clinton‘s emails. Thousands of pages of Clinton emails were released last night, and while the State Department has maintained that nothing that was sent to Clinton’s private email was marked classified, things ended up being marked so after the fact.
Toner was repeatedly pressed on why they weren’t marked classified to begin with and whether the entire thing was “mishandled.” One reporter asked him if it isn’t extremely important to not send information to a private address “that could at any point be classified.”
Toner rejected some of the premises they put forth and defended the State Department’s handling of the emails, saying they can’t simply just go back and judge like that in hindsight.
