Rubio: Obama’s Mosque Visit Was About ‘Pitting People Against Each Other’

rubioPresident Obama spoke at a mosque yesterday about Islam and tolerance, and the reactions were mixed. As far as Marco Rubio is concerned, Obama was preaching division.

According to The Washington Post, Rubio addressed the president’s U.S. mosque visit––a first in his presidency––and lamented, “I’m tired of being divided against each other for political reasons like this president’s done. Always pitting people against each other.”

He brought up the visit as an example of such––”basically implying that America is discriminating against Muslims.”

And whereas many thought Obama’s message was an inclusive one, Rubio argued it was plenty divisive:

“Of course there’s going to be discrimination in America of every kind. But the bigger issue is radical Islam. And by the way, radical Islam poses a threat to Muslims themselves.”

As ThinkProgress pointed out today, however, George W. Bush visited the Islamic Center of Washington D.C. days after 9/11 to preach a similar message of tolerance and understanding.

Rubio himself has criticized Trump’s proposed Muslim ban, but like many Republicans he considers radical Islam a serious problem.
