Schumer to Hillary: ‘Blame Yourself’ for Losing to Trump Instead of Comey and Russia
Chuck Schumer says its time for Hillary Clinton and other Democrats to accept the fact that they didn’t lose the 2016 election just because there were outside forces working against them.
The Senate Minority Leader spoke with Washington Post about the Democratic Party’s efforts to move past the election and come up with a new economic growth platform. Schumer said that Democrats have to take responsibility for their losses and change the perspective of those who think that their only agenda now is to oppose President Trump.
“When you lose to somebody who has 40 percent popularity, you don’t blame other things — Comey, Russia — you blame yourself,” Schumer said. “So what did we do wrong? People didn’t know what we stood for, just that we were against Trump. And still believe that.”
In public events following the election, Clinton chose to blame her loss on Russian interference along with James Comey‘s 11th hour letter to Congress about her email investigation. Clinton says she accepts the “responsibility for every decision [she] made,” but she has drawn a great deal of criticism for spreading the blame around.
Schumer told WaPo that his party will soon roll out their new agenda, called “A Better Deal.” The platform was designed by Democratic heavyweights in order revitalize the party’s economic approach, appeal to Trump voters, and promote progressive solutions to a variety of public concerns.
