Just kidding, lol!
That, essentially, was White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer‘s stated position on one of the most stunning remarks of President Donald Trump‘s campaign — in which he called for Russian hackers to find Hillary Clinton‘s missing emails.
“He was joking at the time,” Spicer said of then Candidate Trump. “We all know that.”
Kristen Welker of NBC seemed to be incredulous.
“He was joking?” She said. “He said that as a candidate and pressed during the press conference over and over again.”
“I understand,” Spicer said.
At a July press conference in Florida, Trump said:
If they hacked, they probably have her 33,000 emails. I hope they do. They probably have her 33,000 emails that she lost and deleted…Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you can find the 33,000 emails that are missing. I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.
The comment from Spicer on Monday squares with Trump’s position in the immediate aftermath of that remark. The day after Trump made that statement, he said in a Fox News interview “Of course I’m being sarcastic.”
