During today’s press briefing at the White House today, press secretary Josh Earnest expressed regret for a joke he made about President-elect Donald Trump’s hair last year.
Following Trump’s announcement of his proposed Muslim ban, Earnest commented about the real estate mogul’s “carnival barker routine” while remarking on his appearance.
“The Trump campaign, for some time now, has had a ‘dustbin of history’-like quality to it, from the vacuous sloganeering, to the outright lies; even the fake hair,” Earnest said, adding the pertinent question is whether Republicans are “going to be dragged into the dustbin of history” with the Trump campaign.
Earnest’s diatribe against Trump led to a rebuke from Trump himself, he stated it was “disgusting for a presidential representative to make that comment.”
When presented with his year-old comments today, as part of a question on whether or not he regretted anything he had said about Trump in the past, Earnest confirmed that this was something he’d like to take back.
“I think you’ve identified one of the things I wished I hadn’t said,” Earnest said, further stating that anyone who has done that job for as long as he had likely has said a thing or two they regret.
