Speaking at a conference in California recently, former George W. Bush advisor Karl Rove suggested that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suffered from brain damage as a result of a 2012 fall.
“Thirty days in the hospital?” Rove asked at a conference alongside author Dan Raviv and former White House Press Sec. Robert Gibbs. “And when she reappears, she’s wearing glasses that are only for people who have traumatic brain injury? We need to know what’s up with that.”
According to the report in the New York Post, which flagged Rove’s comments, spokespeople close to Clinton dismissed the GOP political advisor’s speculation. “Please assure Dr. Rove she’s 100 percent,” a sarcastic Clinton representative said.
On Tuesday morning, CNN anchor John King called Rove’s comments “reprehensible,” “shocking,” and “over the line.” Washington Post reporter Robert Costa wondered if the donor base that Rove is tapped into may be nervous about associating with him in the future as a result of his speculation about Clinton’s possible health woes.
King speculated that Rove’s statement suggests that the GOP is afraid of Clinton. He added that he would be “interested to see” if Rove’s employers at Fox News press Rove to explain his comments.
