‘Obama’s Gestapo’: State Republicans Compare IRS To Nazi Secret Police In Fundraising Email

It seems like just yesterday we were talking about former South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Dick Harpootlian comparing Governor Nikki Haley to Hitler’s mistress Eva Braun.

Now the South Carolina Republican Party is going full-Godwin’s Law on Democrats, calling the IRS “Obama’s Gestapo” in a fundraising email released earlier this week. The term was used in both the subject line and interpolated into the IRS logo.

“As the leader of her party, Governor Haley should condemn these hateful remarks,” Jamie Harrison, the new chairman of the state’s Democrats, quickly demanded. “And as Chairman of the SCGOP, Matt Moore should apologize to the people of South Carolina and donate any money raised from this email to charity.”

Republicans are already trying to distance themselves from the comments.

“If anyone was upset, we certainly regret it,” said Alex Stroman, executive director of the South Carolina Republicans, who explained that the email was meant to be attention-grabbing. “Our goal was to highlight the IRS’s questionable tactics and their decision to selectively scrutinize and target certain groups, including those in South Carolina.”

“There is no place in politics for any comments like that,” Governor Haley said on Tuesday. “I didn’t think so when they were done to me, I don’t think so now.”
