This morning, a number of Republicans who were in the immigration meeting in which President Donald Trump reportedly called Haiti and African nations “shithole countries” appeared on Sunday shows to state that they didn’t recall Trump saying that.
One conservative writer, however, thinks this is pretty weird considering that he’s been told Trump was boasting to his friends about those very comments.
In a tweet sent earlier today, Erick Erickson noted that he spoke to one of the president’s friends who said Trump called him up to brag about the remarks because he felt it would play well with his base.
It’s weird that people in the room don’t remember Trump using that word when Trump himself was calling friends to brag about it afterwards. I spoke to one of those friends. The President thought it would play well with the base.

After the Washington Post first reported on the president’s comments, the Associated Press followed up with a report that stated Trump privately defended his remarks to others and called up associates to judge their reactions.
