NBC is now reporting what has seemed fait accompli for the past 48 hours: Megyn Kelly‘s exit from the network is “imminent.”
NBC News reports, according to “sources familiar with the situation,” that NBC News is preparing to move on from Kelly.
“Sources familiar with the situation tell NBC news that conversations have already started about Megyn’s exit,” said Today show correspondent Morgan Radford on Friday morning. “The exact details of which remain unclear at this point.”
The details would seem to be complicated. Kelly has well over a year remaining on her reported three-year, $69 million contract with NBC.
Kelly’s exit comes days after she questioned why it’s wrong for a white person to wear blackface — comments for which she apologized the next morning on her show.
The Kelly camp, however, seems to believe that the anchor’s coverage of #MeToo controversies, including those involving NBC News figures such as Matt Lauer and Tom Brokaw, may be what’s really driving NBC to push her out. Kelly’s lawyer Brian Freedman has asked that Ronan Farrow, who left NBC News last year after the network wouldn’t run his reporting on Harvey Weinstein, bear witness to Kelly’s exit talks.
