During today’s White House Press Briefing, Press Secretary Sean Spicer was asked to respond to Jimmy Kimmel‘s emotional monologue about his newborn son’s heart surgery during which he slammed President Donald Trump for trying to cut the National Institutes of Health by $6 billion, and praised Congress for instead allotting an additional $2 billion. He was also asked about former President Barack Obama‘s response to Kimmel, which was that protecting the ACA for kids is “exactly why they fought for it.”
Spicer said, “Well, I think we share that concern for the Kimmels’ child, as well as any child that needs care, and that’s frankly why the President fought so hard to improve the bill like he did this morning, to make sure that there was that extra layer of protection for anyone with a pre-existing condition, no matter their stage in life.”
“That’s why we’re fighting so hard for this. But I think most importantly, and I think at the end of Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue, he said that… we need to have some of these things that aren’t Republican or Democrat, that are American policies, and I think that’s what the president’s fighting for right now,” he continued.
He then said that our healthcare system is “failing,” and that people need healthcare that’s both in-range and affordable.
