I personally have no strong feelings either way about glenn beck, but I think the screeds about “shadow governments” and “shadow parties” is over the top and ripe to be parodied. I think, through his astronomical viewership and near-religious devotees, he has entered a sort of a comic echo chamber, where he is forced to perform ever more outrageous and outlandish stunts to retain his following.

I know that people get a lot of leeway talking about public figures, but what Beck said about Soros was just a horrific lie. I’m hardly alone in believing that Beck should be fired from Fox. A successful lawsuit would go a long way in this direction. Beck needs to be marginalized like other cranks on the extreme right like Alex Jones.

There are two questions. Should Soros sue Beck? There’s a degree of pettiness that goes with law suits when you’re as wealthy as Soros. On the other hand, there’s the principle that Beck (nor anyone else) should be allowed to defame character as Beck was clearly doing last week or slander someone.

Then there is a question of whether Soros could win the case. It would be his word against Beck’s. Who else could testify? As a public person, people can get away with writing things about Soros far more than what can be gotten away with writing about Beck’s wife for example or any other person not in the public domain.

That doesn’t make what Beck said acceptable. It was a horrific lie and he has pissed off another American community again, this time the Jews.

Actually, it was articulated by President GHW Bush to describe a post-Cold War world order that left the U.S. the one remaining superpower.

Two points: 1) StopBeck.com is the primary force behind the advertiser boycott of Beck’s propaganda on Fox, and he is not supported by or affiliated with Soros. He is a law student.

2) There is a vengeance behind Beck’s smear job of Soros. Soros spent a wad of money to defeat Bush in 2004, and those on the right, even Beck who claims that Bush is a “progressive,” hate Soros for making that effort.

If you read Soros’ biography, that and supporting liberal organizations are the big slams they have against him. In other words, the right disdains Soros for the same reason that the left disdains the Koch billionaires funding the astroturf tea party groups.
