Bill O’Reilly Questions Why NPR’s Nina Totenberg Doesn’t Face Scrutiny Like Juan Williams
NPR’s controversial firing of former staffer Juan Williams is still providing plenty of talking points for Bill O’Reilly, and he addressed the issue again tonight, this time bringing in Weekly Standard staffer Stephen Hayes and asking why some other NPR contributors – particularly legal affairs correspondent Nina Totenberg – haven’t faced similar consequences to Williams.
This isn’t the first time the Totenberg question has come up, and O’Reilly and Hayes hit on many of the same points previously made about Totenberg by Fox’s James Rosen – namely, her 1995 comments about late Sen. Jesse Helms, and (especially) her appearances as a commentator on roundtable show Inside Washington.
Hayes did allow that he thinks Totenberg “tries to be basically straight” in her reporting, but her involvement as a pundit on Inside Washington is “pretty bad,” and that ultimately she can voice opinions because NPR higher-ups “agree with her.” He also had some praise for Cokie Roberts, though she also “certainly comes from the left.”
They later returned to another two staples of the Juan Williams saga – NPR’s $1.8 million gift from George Soros‘ organization, which O’Reilly said could raise suspicion the organization was “bought by the far left,” and possible public de-funding of NPR. Williams’ firing provided O’Reilly with a wealth of material, but with so many topics we’ve already heard about, it looks like the reservoir might be drying up. Video of the segment below.
