Maria Bartiromo On U.S.-Saudi Relationship: We Do Business ‘With Other Amoral People Across the World’
Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo made some eye-opening comments about the U.S.-Saudi Arabia relationship Tuesday morning, amid widespread condemnation of the Saudis from many people on both sides of the aisle over the disappearance of Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi.
Speaking with Rep. Peter King (R-NY) — who came down hard on the Saudis as they are reportedly about to admit that Khashoggi died because of a botched interrogation — Bartiromo did not seem willing to throw away the U.S.-Saudi relationship over this episode.
“This is the balance that we walk,” Bartiromo said. “Because you said the Saudis — you always thought that they were amoral. We do business and partnerships with other amoral people across the world. Let’s not forget that.”
Bartiromo added, “But, at the same time, this was real disappointing because this was our last hope of any stability in the Middle East to fight back on the terrorists from Iran. Do you walk away from that when you know that this was our — we needed that partnership with the Saudis to fight the terrorists in Iran?”
In light of Bartiromo’s comments, it’s worth noting that Bartiromo, as of this writing, is still scheduled to participate in next week’s Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh — an event from which a bevy of other U.S. media and other companies (as well as prominent individuals) have withdrawn.
