Jeff Flake Rips Trump on Senate Floor Over ‘Treason’ Comment: ‘Treason Is Not a Punch Line’

Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) took to the Senate floor to denounce President Trump once again, this time over the President’s comments yesterday just blithely suggesting maybe the Democrats are treasonous for not clapping during his State of the Union.

He said Congress cannot be “numb” to such rhetoric from the President when it’s “not normal,” and once again knocked Trump for his “reckless disregard for truth and decency.”

As for the remarks yesterday, Flake said the following:

“I have seen the President’s most ardent defenders use the now-weary argument that the President’s comments were meant as a joke. Just sarcasm. Only tongue-in-cheek. But treason is not a punch line, Mr. President.”

And the idea that the State of the Union was supposed to be a unifying affair, he continued, is only undermined by such remarks.
