Bill O’Reilly: Are We A Welfare Nation Now?

Video

On Tuesday, The Factor‘s Bill O’Reilly asked viewers a question: Are we a welfare nation now?

Calling President Obama’s new budget proposal “financially outrageous” for adding something to the tune of 1.3 trillion dollars in deficit spending, O’Reilly noted that the President is spending “far more money than any other president ever has,” even as the economy remains shaky.

RELATED: MSNBC Guest: Is Newt Gingrich ‘The Food Stamp Speaker’?

But Obama is betting that voters have become people who “want free stuff” from the government, even at the expense of sacrificing some of their freedom. “And you know what?” he added. “The President might be right.” Americans would rather just get by instead of putting in the hard work necessary — be it studying diligently at school or putting in the effort and time required to learn a new skill or trade — to become independently successful in this tough economy. And it’s that very mindset, O’Reilly continued, that has this country seeing a growing divide between the Democratic and Republican parties. “Free stuff is a powerful lure,” he concluded. “There’s no question about it.”

I must be dong something wrong because Obama hasn’t given me any free stuff yet.

Ok, so the poor and lazy Dems are getting free stuff from Obama.

What are the poor and lazy Republicans getting?

  • Anonymous

Yes only Democrats get free stuff… Right republicans?

There was never too high a deficit nor too large a debt while W was looking for those invisible WMDs.

They’re sucking up all of that sweet, sweet welfare honey in the red states. Last year, they would jump on their GOV funded Hoverounds and “protest” at teabagger rallies where the more intelligent mouth breathers’ kids would have “not THAT racist” signs of some African warlord with a bone in his nose. Oh, and they would proudly declare that their 2nd amendment rights were NEVER going to be taken away. Even though no one had ever said anything about 2nd amendment rights. These days, they’re stuck in their parents’ basements, watching Zombie Reagan porn and decrying the President’s “war on religion” while praying that Mittens will become even more extremely “conservative”.

    These are the days, friends!

“In my opinion – all right? Tide goes in, tide goes out. Never a miscommunication. You can’t explain that. You can’t explain why the tide goes in.”

I also can’t explain why this guy has show.

    Yes. Liberals love free abortions.

Did you know what Obama is making McDonald’s do for their Monopoly 2012 Sweepstakes?

Peel off Virginia Avenue? You guessed it….free abortion.

In 2008, an Obama supporter offered me $10 in Whataburger bucks if I voted for Obama. I didn’t know that he would kill Michael Jackson AND Whitney Houston. And the 2 patty melts I bought weren’t that good.

    ugh.. go die.

     LMAO!….

This is ridiculous.  The young people now are voting themselves new entitlements?  Give me a break.  If anyone has a boatload of entitlements to look forward to its Bill O’Reilly’s baby boom generation constantly voting things its butt can’t cash.  Unpaid for Cold War – Sure sounds great!!  Unpaid for wars in the Middle East – Awesome!! Prescription plan and tax-cuts for the wealthy – Perfect!!  But you keep your damn government hands off my Social Security and Medicare!!
The young generation of today is going to get shafted with the debts run up by the boomers and this guy thinks he should be lecturing on discipline.

  • Anonymous

O’Reilly also doesn’t understand how tide and gravity work as well.

I haven’t gotten any free stuff in the last 4 year of the Obama admin?!.

Ya and can you believe he went to the same school as Obama?? FUK FOX!!@#$

Bush leaves a 1.3 trillion deficit, a recession and 2 active wars.

4 YEARS HAVE PASSED AND OBAMA HASN’T MAGICALLY BALANCED THE BUDGET.

I want to see the birth certificate, don’t you agree?

  • Anonymous

What I never understand about this argument is, its bad to get free stuff if your taking it in a corrupt manner. But its ok to find as many loopholes in the tax code, to avoid paying the taxes that you should be paying. Or its ok to hire a lobbyist to bribe a congressman so you don’t have to pay anymore taxes. As a man in law enforcement I have seen everyone  on the income scale cheat the system. The system is set up to be cheated upon. Example. I know many veterans. Veterans are like anyone else. Some are honorable, some are not. They talk with each other about how to bleed the most out of the system. Some deserve this extra money, some do not. Its no different with the poor. Rich people are the same way. Some launder and hide their money, some do not. Poor people are no different they talk with each other and get what they can.

I’m just really sick of the hypocrisy, America wasn’t a “welfare nation” under Bush but somehow today we are?

What I hate most about conservatives is instead of trying to find solutions to educate the uneducated and feed the hungry, they prefer to blame Obama for why so many people need government assistance. As if Obama would prefer people living of the government instead of a job.Obama came to fix a mess stop an economic mess, stop muddying up the water.

  • Anonymous

The Pekinese won Westminster. Poor America on display.

  • Anonymous

That’s a good point. A lot of conservatives like to think that all poor people are lazy and entitled, and many liberals like to believe that (or speak as if) zero are. The reverse is true in regards to rich people. The truth is, corrupt people are all over the place and so are good, honestly disadvantaged ones.

  • Anonymous

Are we a welfare nation? I don’t talk with food in my mouth, so let me get done with my government cheese here, then I’ll answer.

  • Anonymous

To your point about red states receiving far more federal tax allotments than it pays into:  http://visualeconomics.creditloan.com/united-states-federal-tax-dollars/

  • Anonymous

You got $10 ?  I only got $5…dammit, I knew I should have held out for more.

  • Anonymous

…so he lied cause I heard him say that he was going to fix the economy in 2years.
He lied and now the excuses….

p.s.  He knew what he had when he said it – so he was either joking a la Stewart, or he lied.  Either way, don’t you think you want more from a President than a liar or a joker?

  • Anonymous

Your mad at Obama because he can’t fix the mess republicans made fast enough?

  • Anonymous

You suckers haven’t got a free mortgage, college tuition, healthcare, food stamps, or free Obama money? You all must be tripping.

  • Anonymous

Where does the hypocrisy enter?  Any idea how many more people receive public assistance under Obama?

There is a reason he’s been referred to as Food Stamps press.

You somehow think of the government as a “soup kitchen”.  Hmmmm  Who knew?

The country took a very big economic hit in 2008 and as a result a lot of people lost their jobs. Many consider it to be the biggest economic downturn since the great depression. Of course there are more people on food stamps now. You act like all of this was Obama’s doing. Most of the hit took place before he even took office. Tell you what, if my tax money goes to people so they don’t starve to death in our country, I’m fine with that.

Bill O’Reillt is playing class warfare. Shame on you Bill. We’re in this together, remember? There’s no dividing us up!

I agree with BillO. Bout time we all sacrificed something and worked harder. Less spending and free gubimnent stuff for all the people who know how to game the system as well as close loopholes and raise the top rates for the fat cats who want to cry about deficits while demanding a tax cut.

What you say about cheating the sytem is true, thats why government shouldnt be in the business of giving away free stuff.  Costs should ALWAYS be scrutinized, they should be tight with our money not “shovel ready” it as fast as they can. Its in governments nature to grow, that needs to be resisted not embraced. When you embrace giant government it becomes unsustainable almost instantly. If we re-elect this too those entitlements wont even last 4 years and lots of people will starve. If they doubled the tax rate right now we would still be falling behind on the debt but lots more people will be out of work.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Neil-Murphy/100000566621491 Neil Murphy

Your social security is gone, from the presidents own mouth during the debt crisis. “If we dont raise the debt ceiling I cant guarantee the checks come out this month” I dont pay any social security to china but somehow we are relying on their cash to get our benefits.

Well I take all the free stuff >I< can get. DUH. Does that make it any smarter for the government to give away the free stuff?

In fact, thats excactly why they shouldnt. Its a bottomless pit. You could pay people 5k a month on welfare for years and the day the checks stop coming they wont be able to feed themselves.

In what way is this class warfare?  The 50% of us who actually PAY FEDERAL TAXES ARE FED UP WITH THOSE WHO PAY ZILCH, NADA, NOTHING.  Yes, there are those who need some help, but not all of the 47% who are just sucking the rest of us dry.

As Maraget Thatcher once said, Socialism is great until you run out of other peoples money.

The Supreme Socialist of this Country, Barack the Bold and Braggart is a Marxist by all accounts and wants the US to become the next Euro-Socialist state.  Is anyone paying attention to Europe and how this is failing miserabll???

Not to mention the record number of spineless “PRESENT” votes as an Illinois Senator, a post he quit for personal gratification.

Not to mention his quitting his post as a United States Senator, again, for personal gratification.

Not to mention his “love” for the country that he wants to fundamentally change it. You know, the same country that his wife was never proud of, until her husband, the champion teleprompter reader got selected by guilty whites and brainwashed blacks, (Samuel Jackson and Oprah Winfrey come to mind) the President of the United States.

Not to mention the fact that he never advised those who thought he would pay their mortgages, car payments and student loans out of his “stash”, that it ain’t going to happen.

Not to mention his utter disdain to America’s most reliable and best allies, Israel and Canada.  You know, the way he treated Netayahu and the way to stuck his fingers in the eyes of thousands of unemployed by scuttling the Canadian oil pipeline. And while we are talking about dissing allies, Britain is certainly among the top three on his list.

That is what you and your miserable ilk tell all those unborn human beings, 300,000 times a year.

Compare the seriousness and maturity of Republicans like Ryan to this mega maniacal, Marxist-wannabe buffoon in the White House!

We’re facing critical issues because of a Democratic Party that institutionalized government-dependency as a means of social control, and we’re now paying the price!

Its commonly argued by O’Reilly and others on the right that the poor are getting too much support, etc. Well, how much is being spent on welfare? How much do you think?  The non-working poor receive a total of 10% of our country’s overall welfare spending, or 5% of our overall budget. Check out this analysis, its interesting: http://motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2012/02/how-much-do-we-spend-nonworking-poor

Problem is Neil that all government officials are for a big government. Neither the republicans or the democrats have any track record of actually making government smaller and more efficient. Oh sure you will here Reagan, or Bush, or Romney talk about cutting government but they wont or never did. Here is the truth. We have a big government with lots of spending. One side(the democrats) wants the wealthy to pay more and have more social programs. One side( the republicans) wants to cut taxes but still spend crap loads on defense and other huge government programs. What baffles me to this day, is that Bush cut taxes and then started fighting two major wars. That was one of the dumbest things a president has ever done. I hear the republicans say all the time well if we raise taxes it wont solve the long term deficit problems. Then i hear the democrats say, we cant cut our way out of this deficit problem. And you know what? We don’t ever do either. The truth is that we have to do both, and both sides know it. But cant seem to get it done.

  • Anonymous

Your outrage includes, I assume, those companies that did not pay any income taxes. There were 30 of those very profitable companies (pretax profits of $160 billion).

Moreover, when compared to the statutory rate of 35 percent, the average effective tax rate for 280 Fortune 500 corporations was only 18.5 percent.

p.s. you need to earn a specific amount of money to pay income tax and if 47%, as you claim, do not pay income tax, then it might be concluded that their wages are simply insufficient.

    Cheers!

Ryan’s effort is to be complimented – unfortunately it is based on well-known republican voodoo economics: slash, cut, pray and hope for the best; oh, and if it doesn’t, no worries, only the low-income class is affected.

Oh, & BTW, just some advice. If you’re going o blame the country’s problems on a group, try blaming it on a group that encompasses less than 1/2 our population, okay?

  • Anonymous

quite the unsatisfying response, what did I expect, right?

  • Anonymous

I guess I was thrown off by the title of the article (which is all I usually read), where Bill is asking if we are a “Welfare Nation”. I was just supplying the answer, based on the actual numbers. You may not like Mother Jones, but the stats are publically available if you want to check their math. Most of our nation’s social welfare spending, of course, goes to the elderly. 10% of our social welfare spending (5% of our overall spending) goes to support the non-working poor. In other words, our budget deficit has not been caused by our support of the non-working poor, and any suggestion to the contrary is not supported by the actual numbers.

  • Anonymous

And that is the point. Food stamps represent a miniscule portion of our nation’s budget deficit. But O’Reilly and company would have you all believe it is much more of a big deal than it really is, and pose silly questions like “Are we a welfare nation now”.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/RKLFFXBQV4Z3EL2WBZQ2CAPMC4 Jim

People like you pillory the Rep Party for being all white and then ignore the fact that whites take about 35-40% less than their demographic and black folks 300% more. Your goal posts move so quickly even you can’t hit them. Your “ironic” comment is mostly correct, minus the irony.

  • Anonymous

Your contempt for the elderly is plainly visible in your post.

Do you include your parents in your envy and hate? If so, whose basement will you spew your garbage from once they they kick you out?

Just remember that the elderly worked all their lives, and earned the support they get, while some of the young  – especially those who DEMAND support from government, like the OWS freeloaders – never worked a day in their lives and have no intention to do so.

  • Anonymous

Don’t be silly. Nobody is contemptuous of the elderly. In fact the only people talking about cutting their benefits are republicans. No, we progressives want to maintain their benefits and pay for them by increasing taxes. My point was the cost to our country for taking care of the non-working poor (food stamps, etc.) is not, as you suggest, such a big drain on our country. Only 10% of our total social welfare cost. Does that surprise you?

  • Anonymous

Not to mention that the 50% number are those who don’t pay income taxes, not federal taxes.  That would include those whose income comes strictly from other sources than a salary or fee (If Romney wasn’t collecting a speaker’s fee, he’d be one of them) or have sufficient deductive loopholes to reduce their taxes owing to zero.

Bill….Get your head out of your ass and answer your own question here.  Yes…we are a welfare nation.  Specifically, we are a “corporate welfare” nation.  Republicans and their twisted skewed ideologies have contributed to the largest amounts of corporate and millionaire welfare in history.  Ronald Reagan started the process of corporate welfare in this nation and dubya pretty well took that to new depths with his rubberstamp GOP congress.  To be hones, yes we are a welfare nation…..a corporate welfare nation.
