Bill O’Reilly On Fox News’ 14th Birthday: “Our Cable News Competition Has Been Destroyed”

video

Today is the 14th anniversary of Fox News’ launch, and Bill O’Reilly marked the occasion on the Factor tonight by playing an old clip of what was then the The O’Reilly Report – and taking some shots at the network’s competition (or lack thereof).

He recalled the early days of “very few cable clearances” for Fox News, but quickly noted that “now, we dominate television news in America.” He was much more humble, however, when revisiting his show from the early days, saying he was “kind of embarrassed,” and even admonishing himself with a, “How stupid was that?!” after playing a clip of an early debate. He then balanced that out too, with a clip of him faring much better in a different back-and-forth.

And of course, there were digs at MSNBC (without actually saying “MSNBC”). Most notably: “Our cable news competition has been destroyed. Ratings for liberal TV news are dismal.” He enunciated “destroyed” and “dismal” was particular flourish. Video of the segment below, complete with some off-camera taunting by Monica Crowley and an interesting remark about his 1996 hairstyle.

Congrats to you Bill O’ The Bigot you reach less than 1% of the American population.

  • The Real Royal King

Except, of course, FOX is not a news channel. By design. Less than 5% of its programming is news. Why the pretense? Why is FOX ashamed to admit that it exists as a Republican Propaganda Ministry via repetitive rightist commentary? Again, why is FOX ashamed of its mission?

Thank you FOX for giving voice to those of us who aren’t left wing nuts. Watching the left go absolutely insane with jealousy over your success provides daily amusement. Keep up the GREAT work!!

OK, Michelle-in-Utah, you’re really losing your tenuous grasp on reality. You’re climbing down into the mire of trolldom. Nothing more than a Mormon Nutso.

Congrats to FNC, and to Bill O who is the number one cable news show. I love it when the left gets their panties in a wad over FNC and especially Bill O.

FNC saw the niche, grabbed it, and wins with it. If only the others had taken a cue, there might be some competition among the cablers. But with CNN and MSNBC playing the left card only, folks are simply tuning out.

Congrats to MSNBC as well though, since yesterday all three of their key anchors garnered over 1M viewers each. That is pretty good for them. CNN, with P/S having “attack Palin/attack tea party” as they prime theme, isn’t gonna cut it. Going into the MSNBC gutter isn’t going to gain them any viewers.

For all the garbage dumped on Fox News, Americans overall have a positive image of the network’s pundits. O’Reilly is the most important pundit on television today. By far.

What was interesting was the “never heard of him” category.

The leaders in this category were all MSNBC — for the lack of a better word — personalities.

42% never heard of Keith Olbermann.

55% never heard of Rachel Maddow.

70% never heard of Ed Schultz.

Charles Schultz, now that’s another matter.

They reach only 12% of America while Fox News hits 42%.

ALL television shows reach a small % of the population. You can only judge a show or network by how it performs against it’s competition. And, as O’Reilly said, FOX dominates big time. Obviously, people who are in tune with politics watch cable news. The FOX ratings vs. MSNBC and CNN reflect the fact that there are far more conservatives and moderates in the country than there are liberals. Everyone knows that.

Not to worry, though, the DNC is working on the voting bloc that does NOT watch cable news, is most politically clueless, and at the same time most impressionable. The bloc that listens to Leo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx when it comes to voting. The voting bloc that helped get Obama elected. The clueless youth.

    Rhetorical question.

The numbers don’t lie. Fox has destroyed the other cable news network. They win in every time slot every night, every week, every month. And it’s not even a close race. Even when the competition has a good night, Fox doubles or triples their audience. And the recent Pew Research poll shows that Fox wins every ideological group — moderates, independents, Republicans and even among many Democrats. Except for the ultra-far-Left ideologues, who hates Fox for the very reason it is successful — namely its unwillingness to censor stories and dumb down its coverage with mind-numbing political correctness. The left can spin and spin, but the facts here speak for themselves.

Thanks FOX for giving us the REAL TRUTH and NOT the lies pinheads get from ol’ messyNBC. Why don’t the head honchoes at messyNBC hold their people accountable. And also make them start doing some research and not looking like fools all the time? Fox wins because conservatives get ALL their ‘news’ from Fox and talk radio. That’s it. Liberals and moderates get their news from a variety of sources. Not just one network. Fox will always win the ratings war, but almost every conservative is watching them. Because they’re afraid to take a step away and see what the rest of us watch. Instead, they just let their heroes tell them what the other networks are saying, and trust them when they tell them they don’t need to go anywhere else but Fox.

Thank you FOX. I hope your next 14 years are as successful as your first 14.

The Progressives still don’t get it. They are the minority in this country and MSNBC’s ratings reflect that. They insist that the country is left of center. As you will see in November the country is right of center and since the democratic party has been taken over by the Progressive militants. They lost the moderate republicans who foolishly bought in to the obama smoke and mirrors, the independents are gone and now they are losing the moderate democrats. The losses are going to be staggering in not only Congress but in state houses as well. Just in time for redistricting. Say goodnight Progressives.

True, liberals sources are much more diverse –

Besides NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, etc. you also have Oprah, The View, Jon Stewart, Media Matters, Daily Kos, Huffington Post, Michael Moore, Family Guy, Code Pink forums, Rock the Vote, Salon, Jerry Springer, Democratic Underground, and the list could go on, as political news sources used for decision making by liberals. Yes, much more diverse.

The whole jab about Fox only getting 1% of the viewership isnt a strong one. You could make the argument about any program on cable TV. No show gets audiences that are that great outside of maybe something like Monday Night Football. Getting 1% of the country to tune in is actually pretty impressive, and I think the advertisers agree.

“He enunciated ‘destroyed’ and ‘dismal’ was particular flourish.”

The author could write for Faux “News” . . . or $arah Palin . . . or George “our childrens are learning” Bush.

“NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, etc. you also have Oprah, The View, Jon Stewart, Media Matters, Daily Kos, Huffington Post, Michael Moore, Family Guy, Code Pink forums, Rock the Vote, Salon, Jerry Springer, Democratic Underground, think progress, bill o’reilly sucks, news hounds, A.N.S.W.E.R., move on, color of change, Randi Rhodes, Mike Malloy, Workers World Party, WBAI, Pacifica Radio, F.I.S.T., Free Mumia, Prison Radio, Crooks and Liars, No Quarter, News Corpse, Eyes On Fox…..etc. etc.”

Few of these sources claim to convey hard news. Even so, I know of few instances in which these entities deliberately distort factual truths the way Fox routinely does.

Malloy and Rhodes are commentators. I’m not too familiar with Malloy, but I know Rhodes is careful with her facts and quick to correct herself if in error. She regularly gives her listeners “homework” to follow up on the issues she discusses. She also tells them not to simply take her word and to look up the facts themselves!

You don’t mention radio host Thom Hartmann (thomhartmann.com). He is one of the best-prepared, thoughtful, fair-minded progressive hosts on the air. He routinely brings on conservative guests, engaging them in polite but pointed discussions. The only conservative host who may approach his level is Michael Medved.

Fox is a model of deep pockets and shallow ethics. Rupert Moredreck dumped half-a-bil into this journalistic swamp over the course of five years before it became even nominally profitable.

MSNBC entered an already crowded cable universe. It is often available only on premium tiers while Fakes is on the basic tier. It is illogical and unfair to compare their ratings directly with Fox – but that won’t stop the more myopic righties.from doing so.

For all their shrill denunciations and crass bigotry directed at MSNBC personalities – Rachel Maddow’s lifestyle and appearance; Ed Schultz’s weight, et al – the wing-nut right has produced scant evidence of dishonesty or misrepresentation by those same persons. By contrast, MediaMatters.org has documented proof of THOUSANDS of distortions and baldfaced lies presented as “news” on Fox and echoed by other extreme-right organizations.

I fully expect the more vapid right-wingers here to respond with yet another round of shallow, baseless personal attacks rather than respond to the substance of these assertions. Such people are, in fact, cowards. They are so fearful of facing unpleasant realities that they lash out at anyone who threatens to disturb their lives of blissful, happiness-is-a-warm-gun ignorance. They are deluded into acting against their own best interests by Murdock and his “Neocon Billionaire Boys’ Club” pals.

Fox’s is a vile example of “journalism.” Its grim history of deliberate distortions, malicious lies, baseless personal attacks and blatant partisanship is hardly worthy of celebration.

I dont believe that Fox portrays their opinion shows that air as news, and even if they do it speaks more to the viewer’s ignorance as taking that as news and not opinion. Im pretty sure most people like me who dont like the people on MSNBC dont really care about their appearance. It has more to do with the poor quality of their show/discussions that lead me to never consider their programming. I dont dislike Maddow because she is a lesbian, I dislike her because I think she is terrible at her job, which is entertainment.

O’Reilly’s numbers for just his two shows are almost the same as the total prime time viewers of ALL of the MSNBC shows, and that is not counting the late-late or early show of O’Reilly in the West. Which I heard even tops some of the prime time MSNBC shows.

So I would say O’Reilly by himself is destroying the competition.

What’s really amusing is that I hear the high-ratings guys whine about the low ratings talkers quite often…doesn’t seem to be all that different except he’s a direct target of FNC and he’s more or less trying to call them out…the problem is that his supporters are the choir and the people he’s trying to reach wouldn’t listen because they’re the choir of the church of FNC. He probably doesn’t need to give FNC so much credence, though…it lets them think they’re relevant.

Even more amusing is that these ratings mean everything to the networks but really mean jack-shit to the viewers. It’s not like Fox News viewers are watching that channel because of their ratings. I don’t know a singer right wing thinker that has declared “I love FNC because they get high ratings. That really excites me. Oh sure, they DO happen to express the same viewpoints I do on politics, but MAN…when I think about the amazing ratings they get…..who needs CIALIS® when you have FNC?”

If you want a meat and potatos newscast that has minimal opinon watch the BBC News that airs on PBS.

Agreed. BBC has no vested interest in skewing or omitting certain aspects of a news story. I always tell people watch and read at least thee sources rather than being glued to one outlet.

Mmmm, oh yeah…I get aroused just thinking about that. You can have the 1st amendment, I’ll take the 2nd.

I’m sure enough of you like-minded thinkers would have no problem using your 2nd amendment rights to take away my 1st amendment rights, too.

Actually, it’s you libs that seem to have the problem with the first amendment. Case in point:

‘You’re a Liar’: Student Who Heckled Obama Gets Roughed Up

Libs agree with your first amendment right, so long as you agree with them.

You missed the point. Instead you go on to this self-absorbing rant. When it comes to Fox News, Obama truly has Fox News Derangement Syndrome. There was a time when Obama was flustered by Fox News, he to organize the other news outlets to shun Fox News. He eventually had to back down from his mini vendetta.

The same can be said about the neocons and any independent party..that kind of behavior isn’t a trait exclusive to to any one party. Quit trying to make the right wing out to be the angels and anyone whom doesn’t follow your ideology into the bad guys. You’re not being stifled any more than the other side. I went to town hall meetings last year..I heard people who didn’t follow the status-quo get shouted down by the mob. And I’m GA…not exactly a blue state.

No, I didn’t miss a thing. I said two different things which you either missed or are trying to stack together and which really have very little to do with each other. I’ll clarify for you

First: What you essentially said was “FNC sure does seem to be getting under the president’s skin for being such an insignificant network”. What I found funny about that is that I’ve heard nationally syndicated conservative talk show hosts…TV as well…bring up shows that that on many occasions and speak of them as if they’re pretty meek, but they’re clearly not that meek if said talk show host keeps bringing them up. I’d say he needs to let it go. If he’s that concerned about the network, then he needs to learn to not mention them so often. Kind of like when some singer makes waves at some awards show: free publicity. You can hate him/her all you want on your show/newscast…but you’re still promoting them.

Second: I have a difficult time believing that the ratings of FNC is THAT IMPORTANT to the FNC audience. Maybe it provides superfluous info for them to throw out there when in heated debate with their liberal coworkers, but that’s it. I often hear these talk show hosts go on about how high their ratings are compared to the competition…nobody cares.

Except, of course, FOX is not a news channel.

Funny thing, everytime I tune into Fox News, I hear news. If that’s not a definition of “news channel” please tell me what is.

Maybe TRRK meant to say that Fox is not an -0bama lap dog.

Everyone heard of Hulk Hogan, much more than any starting QB in the NFL.. So what does tell you of the intelligence of the Fox News viewers?

  • glenn113

Oh, and by the way, why are almost all of the primetime punduts at the pro war Fox news commentators like O’reillys have 99% more chickenhawks and armchair patriots than all of the other networks combinded. Go to http://www.nhgazette.com/chickenhawks.
