Chuck Todd: Susan Rice A ‘Victim’ Of Conservative ‘Advocacy Media’

NBC News’ Chief White House Correspondent Chuck Todd joined Martin Bashir on Wednesday to discuss the recently announced news that U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice had withdrawn her name from consideration by President Barack Obama to be the next Secretary of State. Todd said that “advocacy media” on the right is responsible for making a “victim” of Rice.

Bashir asked Todd what he thought the reasons were that a qualified potential nominee like Rice would withdraw herself from consideration to be the next Secretary of State.

Todd said that Rice was essentially susceptible to political attacks on her because, since she is an appointee and not a political official, she does not have a public relations team around her to combat those attacks.

Todd cited a recent poll which showed Rice’s name was known by nearly 70 percent of the nation and she had a net negative approval rating.

“This was all driven, in many cases, by some conservative outlets who were making her the center of the Benghazi story,” Todd said. “She sort of became a victim of this.”

Bashir said that Rice’s letter notifying Obama of her withdrawal cites not just the media, but politicians on Capitol Hill that had made her nomination untenable.

“I think she’s right, and I’m not going to sit here and say which should come first,” Todd said. He said that the political class in Washington is “overly reactive” to statements made by opinion makers in conservative “advocacy media” outlets.
