Clinton: Obama on ‘Pretty Firm Legal Ground’ with Immigration Order

Advocates of President Barack Obama’s impending executive action on immigration have cited the actions of previous presidents to make their case. Now they have the endorsement of one.

Speaking at the New Republic’s centennial gala, former President Bill Clinton said Obama’s action was consistent with executive precedent.

“As far as I can tell, every president in the modern era has issued some executive action on immigration,” Clinton said according to MSNBC’s Alex Seitz-Wald, indirectly referring to actions taken by Ronald Reagan and others. “So I imagine he’ll be on pretty firm legal ground.”

Republicans have declared Obama’s proposed move to grant certain legal protections to up to 5 million undocumented immigrants lawlessness and tantamount to tearing up the Constitution. Others have praised Obama for finally acting in the face of congressional sclerosis.

That sound you hear is a scribe writing up what this means for Hillary 2016.
