The Syrian people are greeting President Obama’s announcement that he will seek congressional approval for military action against the Bashar al-Assad regime with varied reactions depending on which side their allegiances lie. But the state-run newspaper’s reaction was nothing if not definitive.
According to the Washington Post, Al-Thawra published a front-page article predicting Obama’s decision was the beginning of American “retreat.” The paper wrote:
“Whether the Congress lights the red or green light for an aggression, and whether the prospects of war have been enhanced or faded, President Obama has announced yesterday, by prevaricating or hinting, the start of the historic American retreat.”
And many in the Syrian opposition are looking unfavorably on the president decision as well. The Post quotes activist Tariq al-Dimashqi as saying, “We are so deeply disappointed,” he said. “This is all just another political game. If they wanted to hit Assad, they would attack immediately, no delay, no warning.”
