Senator Kamala Harris Announces 2020 Run for President on GMA: ‘I Love My Country’
Senator Kamala Harris officially announced her plans to run for president in the 2020 campaign Monday morning during an appearance on Good Morning America.
“I love my country. I love my country,” Harris told co-anchors George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts. “This is a moment in time that I feel a sense of responsibility to stand up and fight for the best of who we are.”
Stephanopoulos challenged the former Attorney General for California about her past comment that “the left has to get over its bias against law enforcement,” asking if she expects that to be a “problem for you in the Democratic primaries?”
Harris deftly showed her moderate side, saying that it is a “false choice to suggest that communities don’t want law enforcement.” She added that “most communities do. They don’t want excessive force. They don’t want racial profiling. But then nobody should.”
This announcement comes with little surprise as most expected Harris to throw her hat in the ring. During a recent appearance on The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert asked her if she was planning on running and she appeared to nod.
