Stephen Colbert Shocked That Soldiers Prefer Food And Soap Over Bill O’Reilly’s Book

video

On Thursday’s edition of the Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert was shocked that troops in Afghanistan might not be that excited to be recieving shipments of Bill O’Reilly‘s book as opposed to survival supplies like food and soap. “Soldier, there are plenty of ways Papa Bear’s books can be useful on the front line. You can use them as sandbags, or as armor for a humvee, or you know, you guys always need toilet paper. I am sure Bill would be honored.”

Colbert conducted his own Pinheads and Patriots segment, calling out a soldier that burned Bill O’Reilly’s book. “How dare you, sir?” exclaimed Colbert. “You sit there thousands of miles from the front lines of punditry, lobbing your criticisms from the safety of your forward operating base, attacking a hero who gets up every day, puts on this uniform, and heads into basic cable hell all out of love of country and a lucrative broadcasting contract!”

It is kind of douchey and arrogant to send a political book to the soldiers-many of whom probably come from all political stripes.  If O’Reilly wants to send them a book, send them something entertaining.  Sending your own book is crass self-promotion, not to mention it probably cost him nothing.

  • http://twitter.com/maynardbrainard Jeremy Brainard

What a patronizing thing to do.  I’m sure you had to offload that crap somewhere, but to consider the troops to be your personal dumping ground for your surplus propaganda… way to show some class, Bill’O.

  • Anonymous

They should have gotten some boxes of Olbermann’s latest monster bestseller .

There may be an unsold case or two left .

  • http://twitter.com/maynardbrainard Jeremy Brainard

But it didn’t happen.  Nice musing, though.  E for effort.

  • One pissed off liberal

So, if you wrote a biography of the last few months in the life of arguably the greatest president we’ve had, that shows the strength and selflessness of said president, you would consider it arrogant to send it to soldiers in Afghanistan that also demonstrate strength and selflessness everyday?..especially since when you’re giving away for free?

  • One pissed off liberal

” Sending your own political screed is not only wrongheaded but also wreaks of crass and tasteless self-promotion”

Well, its obvious that you have no idea what the book is about.  Do regularly comment and render opinion on things you are clueless on?

  • Yukon Jack

The soldiers/marines/sailors are probably more impressed by the fact that ALL proceeds of sales of O’Reilley’s book goes to charity.

Or by the fact that O’Reilley’s drive for Wounded Veterans collected close to a million dollars to help to rehabilitate – yeah, WOUNDED WARRIORS.

Of course, O’Reilley is just a shill.

Especially, compared to all the Left-wing fund-raisers on MSNBC, CNN, New York Times, etc.

If soap, etc. are so *needed*, why did the guy who burned the books say this on his web site:

amypop asked: Hi! Saw your Bill O’Reilly post and some of us were wondering if you could post an APO to their outpost so tumblr can send soap, snacks and anything else you need?

    Answer:
For security reasons, I don’t really want to give out our APO over the Internet. We’re doing fine up here, but some of our buddies, I’m sure, could use a care package. I highly recommend that you go to operationshoebox.com and click “Adopt a Troop”. Thanks!

    http://everqueer.tumblr.com/

Sad that they would burn donated books. English books are not easy to find in Italy, and very pricey. I certainly wouldn’t burn anything new to read, regardless of what it was.

  • Anonymous

BillO exhibits pure arrogance on a daily basis but the thought of him sending his right wing propaganda to the front line bothers me.Steven is right it is better of used as toilet paper.A good book would be from their commander in chiefs like Bush’s book or Obama’s book.Maybe they will better understand the delusional policies that got them there anyway.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

oh my gawd, you can not be serious?

  • cdnhawk

The book was Pinheads and Patriots not Killing Lincoln which would be appropriate to send because it isn’t really political. While I haven’t had the pleasure of reading P and P..I am assuming that all the Pinheads are Liberals and all the Patriots are Conservatives…I could be wrong but I doubt it.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

i can’t believe people are complaining because O’Reilly ships free books to soldiers at war.

    unf*ckinbelievable.

According to the gawker article (and the Colbert bit) the book was ”Pinheads and Patriots” which very much is a political screed.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/ON4HHDYPEEDF3USYEBHZ7CJBCU potvin

This isn’t funny. Burning ANY book is wrong. Shame on them. If this wasn’t ideological why did they take a picture?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Eric-Larson/1589499840 Eric Larson

Ah! Burning Books! Reminds me of the good ol days (roll Eyes)

Funny thing. I was at the Gawker and read this story and a bunch of people over there are talking about how they hide books by Palin, Bush, O’Reilly etc… One even worked at a book store and would send the copies back and tell customers it was on back order. Perfect examples of the Open minded Liberal.

  • Moosenuts99

    You didn’t watch the segment,
    Did you?

  • Moosenuts99

You can’t wash your junk with books. Try watching the segment

  • Norbit

…and viewers, by as much as a 10x ratio, prefer O’Reilly to YOU, Colbert!

  • Norbit

Why don’t we ask the Troops – you know, the ones Obama uses as props for his new media-created ”Hawk” image on terrorism!

  • Anonymous

I haven’t read the book. But from what I have heard, your statement that all conservatives are patriots and liberals are pinheads is totally false. Since one of O’Reilly’s all-time favorite patriots is RFK, you are already proved wrong. I have heard he was so extremely complimentary of Obama that many conservatives were angry.

You have inspired me to pick up the book. I now want to check it out because I want to know without a doubt that  you are totally wrong.

  • Anonymous

Oh now, this is HYSTERICAL. Now that Beck is already gone and fading into obscurity, how much longer until Papa Bear follows him out the door?

  • Anonymous

Have you read the book? I surely doubt it. I haven’t either but I will be picking it up.

From all the reviews on the book, it can hardly be described as a political screed. I can’t wait to see for myself. You should do the same.

  • mori bund

You mean like landing on a carrier with a “mission acomplished” banner?

  • cdnhawk

Maybe I’m wrong…..I’ve been known to be wrong……I guess my point is that P and P is a political book whereas Killing Lincoln is historical and probably educational.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

I’m talking about people on this thread. And I addressed the soap issue in my other comment. Try reading the thread.

I sure agree P and P is more political. BOR also sent many copies of “Bold, Fresh” (which I have read and is not so political, but more philosophical) to the troops and is already sending copies of “Killing Lincoln”. He has sent copies of most of his recent books.

So I’ll be picking up a hard copy of Lincoln and the softcover of P and P. Killing Lincoln is getting absolutely rave reviews. BOR says he took much less on this because it was not like any of his previous books and he is paying his researcher. So although this might be his biggest seller yet, it will most likely not be his most lucrative.

The troops do need books to keep them entertained and sane – as well as basic necessities.

Also, it should be noted from the hit BOR has taken lately, 100% of the profits from his website and a portion of his book profits are donatated to charities – one of which is the Wounded Warrior fund. Also, BOR has raised more that one million more for Wounded Warriors with auctions that he has matched winning bids on. Seems like this was one dumb soldier or made up by Gawker.

“Sending the National Guard to the Arizona border . . . Cutting
    back-room deals to pass health-care reform . . . Conducting troop surges
in Iraq and Afghanistan . . . Considering trying known terrorists in
civilian court . . . Which of these moves have been pinheaded and which
    have been patriotic?”

From the Amazon description of the book. Seems pretty political.

And something completely unrelated I found in the reviews.

“I bought this for a gift but read it myself first. ”

Word of advice to anyone giving a book as a gift, don’t do that. Tacky.

  • Jeffrey

It would not be. However, he did not send THAT book.

  • Jeffrey

    Excellent rebuttal…lol. Take that norbit.

  • Anonymous

“Screed” (ranting and dogmatic) was the key word I was objecting to. And I know I will still be objecting to that after reading it.

  • Anonymous

Actually, that’s exactly the point you just stumbled into:

Even Olbermann, with his giant bloviating ego, didn’t have the gall to act as if the troops were just hungering for his bullshit.  O’Reilly, however is so high on the smell of his own backdraft that he thought his propaganda was just what a 20 year old kid at a firebase in Helmand province needs. He also seems OK with using his “I send my books to support the troops.” trope as a promotion to sell more to the Tea “Folks” back home.

THAT book (released a month ago) is already being sent to the troops. BOR has already read an email on air from a soldier in Afghanistan who received a copy and read it. BOR has sent copies of all his most recent books to the troops!!!

  • http://twitter.com/ZackyBeatz %Zackyatz%Music

Lol Mori Bund you served a glass of shut up juice to Norbit

I doubt anything BillO’ the clown has written is educational considering his butchering of the facts of the massacre at Malmedy during the battle of the bulge by wrongfully blaming U.S. troops and his refusal to admit he was wrong.

  • Jason

Then wouldn’t a Comedian going over to entertain the troops with their stand-up act be patronizing as well?

Look, O’reilly is a huge dork and possibly a dangerous pervert, but I see no harm in sending a bunch of books to soldiers who have nothing to do in what little off time they have.

Stop being a knee jerk leftist reactionary by hating anything someone who disagrees with you does. It makes you look small and stupid.

On an aside, I’d rather get dental surgery than listen to or watch anything performed by Colbert. What a fucking douchebag he is.

  • Jason

It would be excellent if the recycled joke weren’t factually false. “Mission Accomplished” had nothing to do with the war at hand, you childish ignoramuses.

By the way,  have you liberals found the other 7 states Obama was talking about? Learned to speak Austrian? Figure out how to pronounce “Corpsmen” yet?

  • mori bund

I don’t know much about the fund-raisers on MSNBC, CNN & NYT (and I’m sure, neither do you), but Colbert spent a week in Iraq where he toured with his show for the troops, furthermore he did some special shows for them at home, where he raised donations.
He is a supporter ofr DonorsChoose.org and collected huge amounts of money for the children of our troops on many occations.
Speaking of Colbert, a few weeks ago Jon Stewart also went to our troops to entertain them.

So, when will O’Reilly visit our troops?
Maybe they want to meet the man, not just his books. ^^

  • Jason

If Olbermann ever sends anything to the military,  the packaging should be thoroughly examined for explosives. That communist prick absolutely despises the military, unless they do something that he thinks will give his plastic messiah a bump in approval… things he would have called for Bush’s head over if they had happened just 3 years ago.

  • Jason

You mean a bunch of perpetually idiotic liberal children don’t want anyone to hear an opposing viewpoint? I’m shocked. It’s ok, I draw mustaches on any magazine cover with the First Wookie’s face on it. True story.

  • Anonymous

Only viewers with no sense of humor prefer Billo

  • Anonymous

Notice Bill didn’t send his new book Killing Lincoln.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/ON4HHDYPEEDF3USYEBHZ7CJBCU potvin

I’m making a general point that book burning is not funny. Didn’t watch it, not going to watch it.

  • Anonymous

What variety of cretinic troglodyte actually reads those books???

  • FreeMike

“idiotic liberal children” followed by “I draw mustaches (sic) on the First Wookie”.  Any shred of credibility or respect……gone.

  • cdnhawk

Yes..a so called news opinion show on Fox at 8 and satire on Comedy Central at 11:30…..nice comparison……now if you compare the average IQ of each show’s viewers…I’m sure Colbert would win.

  • http://twitter.com/charlie_whiskey celeste

He’s right, though – OPSEC is extremely important, and he isn’t allowed to just randomly give out their address to people he doesn’t know. He pointed them to the right place.

  • Anonymous

Would those books be counted on the New York Times best sellers list?

  • Anonymous

At least they were able to stay warm for a little while.

  • Adrian Z.

If you knew just what this guy wrote you might not say that….

  • Adiran Z.

If you want to be taken seriously you might not want to refer to our president as a wookie. Just saying. Now I’m not saying that I like Obama, I am Liberal but I’m not a huge fan of his.

  • mori bund

Not surprising for a Con, but you didn’t get the point!
Norbit was talking about using the troops for a media-created “Hawk” image, and I gave him just an example why he is a hypocrite.
BTW: this little lapses are everything you can find about Obama? I didn’t even need to start about the “mission accomplished”-guy here or all the BS the repub candidats are talking – such stuff you can find about EVERY public person. (And the real funny thing is, that most of you Cons didn’t even know about Austria before Fox-”News” told you.)

  • Porphyry

Stephane Colbert forgets that *his* books could be used for the same purposes.

  • RepubliCLOWNS

    Because our troops are pigs.

  • RepubliCLOWNS

No one is complaining.  They just burned the books.  It’s not a big deal.  It was just a joke.  Get over it.  Thanks.

  • RepubliCLOWNS

LOL yes, so sad they’re burning books.  Our troops are pigs.  LOL

  • RepubliCLOWNS

Nope, they enjoyed that.  They clearly didn’t care for Bill’s books.  That’s why they BURNED them.  LOL

  • RepubliCLOWNS

Wrong, only $1 per book goes to charity.  Nice try though.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

yes, it is sad they burned books. and no, our troops are not pigs. what a gross, disgusting comment.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

the guy wrote that they did not need soap, etc., they were fine there. so, yes, I think i would still say what I did.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

Then wouldn’t a Comedian going over to entertain the troops with their stand-up act be patronizing as well?
I was thinking the same thing.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

yes, people are complaining. perhaps if you read the comments, you would realize that. maybe next time you should stop, and read a little bit, before just popping off and revealing your inadequacies, for all to see.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

that is so wrong. you should be banned.

  • Terihu

No, it’s even worse. He’s referring to Michelle. That’s just low and nasty, she has been an exemplary First Lady.

  • fyonalon

I wonder why Colbert’s act doesn’t seem patronizing while O’Rs does.  The one event took work and effort the other was essentially lazy.  Colbert is primarily an entertainer, O’Reilly is a political pundit.  Colbert is a comedian.  O’Reilly is a killer.  Maybe the times have changed and courting the troops for political gain is a little less palatable these days.

  • fyonalon

People would be complaining, and how, if Obama had send a cache of his book to the troops.  Gretchen would still be screeching.  Can you imagine?
