Fox Cancels Hannity Tea Party Episode Over Ticket Controversy

Fox News has canceled Sean Hannity‘s plans for a live Tea Party show in Cincinnati tonight after officials found out that their primetime talent was being used to sell tickets. Hannity has been hosting his show from various tea party rallies across the country lately in front of a live audience, but today his program was ordered to return to New York.

Apparently, Fox News officials were not notified that Hannity’s image would be used for profit. Not only were ticket prices determined relative to distance from Hannity himself, Hannity’s name was used to promote the rally, set at the University of Cincinnati.

From the Los Angeles Times:

“FOX News never agreed to allow the Cincinnati Tea Party organizers to use Sean Hannity’s television program to profit from broadcasting his show from the event,” Bill Shine, executive vice president of programming for Fox News said in a statement Thursday. “When senior executives in New York were made aware of this, we changed our plans for tonight’s show.”

The Huffington Post notes that Hannity’s run-in with his higher-ups comes soon after News Corp president Rupert Murdoch suggested that Fox News should not be supporting the Tea Party movement or any political party.

UPDATE: Matea Gold at the Los Angeles Times, who first broke the story, has many more details on the story, including ticket prices and how Fox found out about the matter.

Dang, I was looking forward to watching video of all those violent and spitting tea party protesters.

  • Bias-Media

I’m very discouraged to see that more and more of these “For Profit” events using the TEA Party name. If you really believe in the cause (speaker, organizer, whoever), why “For Profit”??

Imagine a “For Profit” Anti-war rally
Imagine a “For Profit” Support our troops rally

Whoever started this “For Profit” campaign using the TEA Party name…shame on them! I hope true TEA Party believers can boycott them…there are plenty of non-profit TEA Party rallies…

  • Snipzor

I also wonder if the whole charity fraud thing is related. And by wonder, I mean to say this. This is directly related to the charity fraud.

  • Bias-Media

Don’t know of any charity organizations organizing TEA Party rallies. But I should clarify; I did not mean non-profit, as in charity organizations. I mean “not for profit” rallies.

But regarding charity frauds, it’s a known fact that many charities (many, not most) are setup as tax shelters for the rich. In fact, I read a article recently about how some Hollywood celebs do exactly that to avoid paying high taxes.

so, charity fraud? yeah, they exist.

But, back to this article…I’m just disappointed / disgusted / sadden that a good movement is now being highjacked by some for-profit losers…

  • felixw

I know that the Left is intensely suspicious of anything that is for profit. But the tea party people need to raise some cash, since they are the ones footing the tax bill for all of the President’s stimulus and entitlement and pork barrel programs.

How about a conservative who posts links to Sean’s charity tax returns? I don’t suppose she’s a conservative in your eyes anymore.

  • valkyrie101

FOX coverage just to sell tickets? Isn’t that what FOX does, as a TV network, to promote its shows? FOX has every right to run their own reality show, and to promote that for ratings. But this is too cheap for FOX, it is almost free material. Goofy, wacky stuff. The Republican side should be paid a performance fee.

  • TylerDurden

Sorry Snipzor- that wont work. She was idiot lib who started this smear. Show me the article in the Washington Post. Show me the article in the WSJ.

You mean the WP would not want to share such a heinous thing that Hannity was doing?

BTW, I bet you are a 911 truther.

I saw your miscreant libs on TV today saying ” there is something wrong” with that guy who found that autistic girl in Fla. That’s who you represent.

    Bring on your lies.

Gees, Snipzor, lets see what the charity says about this:

    March 18, 2010
    Dear Friends of Freedom Alliance:
This week, false and malicious allegations about Freedom Alliance were posted on the Internet and we want to address them with you. We don’t know the motivation for these vicious smears, but we will not allow them to go unanswered.

First, we want to thank you for your support and assure you that Freedom Alliance’s record of financial stewardship and programmatic achievements not only meets, but exceeds standards of program efficiency set by most charity evaluators. We are extraordinarily proud of our work at Freedom Alliance and stand by our efforts 100 percent.

    False Accusations
The blog posting accuses our friend Sean Hannity of personally benefiting from Freedom Alliance. This 1. is FALSE. Freedom Alliance has never provided planes, hotels, cars, limos, or anything else to Sean. Sean gets nothing from Freedom Alliance except our gratitude for his personal generosity and for all he has done to help the troops and our organization. We have never had to ask Sean for anything, he always generously offers his help before we have a chance to ask him. But to be clear Sean pays for all his own transportation, hotels, and all related expenses for himself and his family and friends and staff, which over the years has added up to tens of thousands of dollars. He does not use any Freedom Alliance Funds or Concert funds in any way, period.

Sean Hannity has contributed $100,000 to the Wounded Warriors Foundation, over $200,000 to the 2. Freedom Alliance, and over tens of thousands of dollars to other military charities and individuals. We only make this information public because of the outrageous slander against him. Sean has no management or operational involvement in, or control over, Freedom Alliance. He has been a selfless patriot in his efforts to raise funds for the education of children of armed services personnel.
The blog posting accuses Freedom Alliance of spending less than 20% of money raised on program 3. activities. This is FALSE. Listed below are the amounts that Freedom Alliance spent for each of the past three years and the categories on which they were spent. The figures are taken from our Federal Form 990 which is filed with the Internal Revenue Service and posted on our web site and audited by an independent auditor using Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. This financial record not only meets, but exceeds standards of program efficiency set by most charity evaluators.

In 2008, Freedom Alliance spent a total of $6,745,717. Of that:4.
79 percent ($5,317,970) was spent on Program Activities•
    14 percent ($945,950) was spent on Fundraising•
7 percent ($481,797) was spent on Management •
    Freedom Alliance

In 2007, Freedom Alliance spent a total of $7,461,350. Of that:
81.5 percent ($6,084,474) was spent on Program Activities•
    13.5 percent ($1,011,501) was spent on Fundraising•
    5 percent ($365,375) was spent on Management•
    I
n 2006, Freedom Alliance spent a total of $7,064,839. Of that:
77 percent ($5,434,538) was spent on Program Activities•
    18.5 percent ($1,308,414) was spent on Fundraising•
    4.5 percent ($321,887) was spent on Management•

The blog posting accuses Freedom Alliance of spending money intended for student scholarships on 5. other expenses. This is FALSE. Freedom Alliance has distributed $3.4 million in Scholarships and created a Scholarship Trust Fund with the additional money that we have raised for that program. That fund now contains $15 million, over $10 million of which has been raised by Hannity and the concerts. Our scholarship program is managed with the understanding that it will be needed for at least the next 20 years as there are children who will ultimately receive a scholarship who are now only a few years old. As indicated on our Federal Form 990, these funds are restricted and used only for future scholarships.

Our Scholarship Fund is one of four programs operated by Freedom Alliance. Supporters may donate to 6. a specific program or for general operating purposes. In 2008, Freedom Alliance received $2.1 million in scholarship donations. The same year, we awarded $802,250 in scholarships and applied $1.3 million to our Scholarship Trust Fund. The funds donated by Sean Hannity directly — or through the proceeds of the Freedom Concerts — and the support of thousands of Americans are used for these purposes:
Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund• : Providing scholarships to those whose parents have been killed or severely injured in their service to our Country. There is now over $15 million in the scholarship fund for the students as they come of age.

Support our Troops• : Many events each year are planned and executed by our staff to show appreciation and provide special opportunities for those actively serving in the military.
Leadership Academy• : A program for high school students in which they are encouraged and trained to serve their country.

These programs would not be possible without the support of Mr. Hannity and many others.
We are proud of our work and numerous accomplishments. We are grateful to our supporters whose voluntary contributions make it possible and we thank you. While it is discouraging to have our record misrepresented in such a malicious way, our work is important and, with your support, it will continue.
    Respectfully,
    Th

Gee, you sure are predictable. Disowning, and quoting the fraudsters, well done. I’ve never seen such failure in such small time.

  • TylerDurden

Let’s look at what a big lib contributed to charity:

Gores’ Charitable Giving Raises Some Eyebrows
    Gore

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, April 15) — In a 34-page 1997 federal tax return, Vice President Al Gore and wife Tipper reported giving $353 to charity, an amount much lower than donations the family has made in previous tax cycles.

That figure is less than one-tenth the typical contribution amount for someone with the Gores’ adjusted gross income of $197,729. That fact has caused some bewilderment in philanthropic circles because of the vice president’s “good guy” image as an advocate for public service and social causes, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

Refute what the charity said- not hannity- refute what the charity said.

Oh, oh, you can’t. You are just another simple lib.

BTW, are you a 911 Truther?

    Yes or No?

  • TylerDurden

Snipzor, the WP or WSJ article- where is it? Oh, they don’t exist.

NEXT! The loser Snipzor has been exposed.

  • Snipzor

Considering you’ve addressed none of the claims in the article I provided (Which was written by a conservative writer, might I add), I shall collect my spoils now for you are hardly the victor in this. Well done though, you’ve failed so many times in this little topic.

  • imnotyourkind

Kudos to Fox for reeling in the tea party self-promotion that Hannity is doing. They need to do the same with Beck and Sarah.

    Snipzor,

TylerDurden posted a statement signed by Oliver “Iran-Contra” North. That ALONE would make you far more credible in this discussion.

This has already been debunked/refuted. Shlussel is a known Hannity-hater, long before this particular issue came up, and has long since complained about everything he does.

Furthermore, it looks like this is going to court… so until then, perhaps you should leave your unfounded conclusions elsewhere. It’s not “evidence” until it’s proven… even if you really really want to believe it.

  • The Real Royal King

The question of the fraud issue is far from closed, INB breathless and mindless defense of all things Hannity notwithstanding. That being said, I’d like to think that Hannity’s being recalled at the last moment is Murdoch’s considered reflection upon the terrible hit it took, from a journalism integrity standpoint, in last year’s FOX’s virtual sponsorship of the Tea Party rallies and the doctored photos, used by Hannity, to inflate the attendance at the Washington rally. In the end, Murdoch desperately craves journalistic respect, even if Ailes’ breathless and mindless quest for ratings gets sidetracked a bit. Factoring into all of this is Murdoch’s well known fondness for micromanagement, I am sure. Whatever, it was a stunning development. I don’t think Hannity has had such a public paddling since his school days.

I will say that as to the charity, I have not the slightest doubt that Hannity’s motives are truly benevolent. It does appear that the charity is being run rather inefficiently.

I love the liberal logic. She is the person who started the rumor so when asked for corroboration, Spinzor cites the original source.

    Priceless liberal pretzel logic.

How appropriate. Those of us who were ever sentenced to life in Cincinnati know it to be one of the strongest,
most backward GOPster places on the face of the earth. Many nicknames. “Tehran On The Ohio” being a favorite. Adolph Hitler is still a rising star! Hannity is beloved in that hick town. This is good!!
